Benefits of Membership

OCI has many benefits including a unique experience of continuous participation in the Canadian nuclear industry. Here are some examples

There is a new renaissance in nuclear both here in Canada and around the world. By becoming a member, you will be able to support and promote nuclear power through your membership fees that  are used at our events held throughout the year. This is particularily important at the provincial and federal political levels. This past spring, OCI hosted two very successful events.  On May 29th, OCI held a Suppliers Day with OPG staff at the Ajax Convention Centre, Ajax, Ontario and had over 125 staff from OPG as well as Mayor Dave Ryan, Mayor of Pickering and Mayor Steve Parish, Mayor of Ajax attend.

Bob Morrison, Chief Nuclear Engineer, OPG was our guest speaker at this event.

On June 24th, OCI organized a Seminar Day on "Nuclear New Build: Planning to Production" at Sheridan College and had over 150 registrants to this event.  Presentations of this event are located under the OCI Events Page.

In Spring of 2006, OCI hosted a reception for all 3 political parties at Queen’s Park.

OCI meets regularly with MPPs to update them on the nuclear file.

OCI holds regular seminar days on topics that range from commercial to technical. This year, OCI hosted two seminar days; one on the ACR-1000 and another held at Sheridan College, which included speakers from NB Nuclear, OPG, AMEC and the OPA.

OCI has a number of active subcommittees that meet on a regular basis with Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, Atomic Energy of Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Association, CANDU Owners Group, the Canadian Nuclear Society, Foreign Affairs and International Trade, NR Canada and Industry Canada. These meetings are held to promote nuclear and to promote our membership at large on industry based issues.

OCI meets regularly with newspaper editorial boards to promote nuclear in as a means to provide balanced reporting in the media. OCI also does letter writing in response articles that appear in the press in the form of letters to the editor. This serves two purposes: firstly we hope that it will provide more balanced reporting and secondly, we want the newspaper editors to be reminded that there is an active and supportive industry that needs to be heard. If there are never any responses from pro-nuclear advocates like OCI, newspaper editors will come to feel that the one-sided articles they print are correct.

EXAMPLE MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT:

Attention Business Editors:

CANDU is Ontario’s best choice for base load energy supply
Ontario’s private sector is ready to work with AECL and Team CANDU

Toronto ON. – March 30 – The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI) is calling on the Ontario government to select nuclear technology for Ontario’s future base load electricity needs. Canada’s CANDU technology will provide Ontario with clean, reliable and affordable base load power and a new CANDU project here in Ontario will generate billions of dollars in economic activity in Ontario and across Canada. All OCI companies are ready to support Team CANDU and build new CANDU power plants here in Ontario.

“Nuclear energy in Canada is a $5 billion a year industry, providing employment for more than 30,000 people in more than 150 companies,” says Martyn Wash, General Manager of OCI. . “Here in Ontario, the economic benefits of a new CANDU project are tremendous. It will provide businesses and consumers in Ontario with clean reliable and affordable electricity for years to come and will ensure the future of our world-class nuclear technology research and innovation capability.

“Ontario needs to implement every possible conservation measure and install all possible renewable energy supply options,” says Wash. “Even then, we will still be facing a looming gap in base load supply of electricity that has serious economic implications for business and residents. CANDU is a key part of the future solution.”

AECL’s CANDU 6 reactors are operated in five countries on four continents by six different utilities and all have outstanding performance track records.

Time is of the essence if we are going to meet our future electricity needs, and CANDU 6 has already been licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. CANDU 6 or single unit equivalents of the 900MWe Darlington are a proven safe, clean, reliable and affordable solution that is ready to fill Ontario’s looming electricity supply gap in the shortest possible timeframe.

We are confident that our superior performing technology, combined with our proven “on time, on budget” track record and the economic benefits to Canada, will make the CANDU option the obvious choice for meeting Ontario’s future electricity needs.
