OPA Supply Mix Recommendations Make Good Sense for Ontario

Toronto, Ontario - Friday, December 09, 2005

New Nuclear plants mean jobs, reliable supply, stable prices and cleaner air

The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI) applauds the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) recommendations for a balanced mix of energy supply sources to meet Ontario’s future electricity needs. OCI strongly endorses the significant role for nuclear and is urging the government of Ontario to immediately start an environmental assessment for the CANDU option.

“Nuclear energy in Canada is a $5 billion/year industry, providing employment for more than 30,000 people in more than 150 companies. Here in Ontario, the economic benefits of a new CANDU project are tremendous

CANDU 6 is a top world reactor, operating in Canada and around the world with an unmatched safety, reliability and power production track record. A recent report from the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI) ranked the CANDU 6 as the most competitive options for new base load power in Ontario.

Canada has designed, built and delivered six CANDU reactors overseas in the last nine years – all on or ahead of schedule, and on budget. The first of two CANDU units in China, at Qinshan, took only four and a half years from first concrete to in-service, making it a record for power reactors built in China. Both CANDU reactors were built ahead of schedule and under budget. This project has been praised as the best nuclear project in China by the Chinese government.

“These international nuclear projects have benefited our Ontario based industries tremendously and helped to keep them viable, efficient and ready for additional projects here at home,” said Mr. Wash. “The OCI member companies are ready to get to work on building new CANDU plants here in Ontario.
