Deep River Academy
From time to time OCI comes across programs that benefit the industry and that our member companies may be interested in supporting. One example of this is the Deep River Science Academy or DRSA.
DRSA is a 6-week summer science immersion program for Canadian teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18. The program is a hands-on experience where students work on original scientific research projects. The students do not work in a classroom – they work in world-class professional laboratories with leading edge equipment. The main partner is Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd., and the emphasis is on nuclear science. Projects are hands-on, interactive, on-going original research with potential real-life applications. The DRSA awards students with 2 academic cooperative high school credits upon completion of the program. Students stay in residence throughout the 6-weeks at a resort located 10 km outside the town of Deep River.
This initiative interests students in entering our business. As a follow-up the students are encouraged to make presentations to their schools about their experience and so inform a much larger number of students about what they do. By becoming involved in the program companies are able to identify quality students and perhaps remain in contact with them until they are seeking employment.
