Qinshan project a testament to Canada's supply chain delivering on-time and on-budget

PICKERING, ON, Oct. 24 /CNW/ - The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI)
congratulates Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) on the 5th anniversary of
the Qinshan Phase III CANDU nuclear reactor project in Zhejiang Province,
China. Praised by Chinese politicians as the most successful major
infrastructure project ever undertaken in the country, the AECL-designed and
built reactors were completed 112 days ahead of schedule and 10 per cent under
budget.
"OCI is proud of the fact that its members played an integral role in
helping AECL complete the Qinshan project, ahead of schedule and under
budget," says OCI president Dr. Neil Alexander. "Our 112 members produce high
quality parts and services, and represent a strong and experienced nuclear
supply chain for CANDU reactors. We look forward to working on more nuclear
projects around the world to meet the growing demand for clean, reliable
sources of electricity."
The nuclear industry is on the verge of a dramatic expansion as countries
around the world take a fresh look at nuclear power as a reliable source of
safe power that has virtually no effect on climate change. It's been estimated
that 200 nuclear reactors will be built around the world in the next 20 years
meaning great economic and job opportunities for Canada's nuclear industry.
The Qinshan CANDU project created 27,000 person years of work for Canadian
nuclear workers and resulted in $815 million worth of exports from Canada
during the construction period.
"Countries around the world can look to Qinshan as an example of what's
possible when a strong supply chain supports the construction of a nuclear
power plant," says Dr. Alexander. "OCI looks forward to further opportunities
with AECL, especially with its new ACR-1000 reactor."

OCI IS THE VOICE OF THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY

The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI) was incorporated in 1979 to promote export sales for its member companies who supply services and reactor components to international and domestic markets.
OCI’s mission is to promote a healthy nuclear power industry in Canada. Now comprised of more than 117 private sector companies, the function of OCI has evolved as a result of significant growth in its membership and the need for a strong advocate for nuclear energy with politicians, media and the public.
OCI liaises with and advocates for industry partners, the media, politicians, stakeholders and the public and arranges key industry events, such as Supplier’s Days, industry seminars and trade missions. The relationships we build allow OCI to collaborate on manufacturing and services solutions for nuclear customers and to continue to promote and build a healthy Canadian nuclear power industry.

OCI growth is a testimony to the value it brings to its membership and the nuclear industry in Canada.
